Perceptions of the Future, 2019

Acrylic on canvas

Commissioned by Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre for the Exhibition Project, part of the Giant Leap Program celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing mission.

The moon landing was as influential event that inspired many artists, designers and architects to visualise the possibilities of the future. Now in 2019, a time where we can all feel a sense of uncertainty regarding our future, I feel it is important to revisit that sense of excitement that was so influential 50 years ago.

Through ‘Perceptions of the Future’, I have created a positive space-age vision of the future surrounding the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre. I have used vibrant and bold colours to stimulate the emotions of the observer and encourage a positive vision of the future, while also exploring the different perceptions of how we expect our future may evolve.

I have drawn inspiration from mid-century modern architecture and the space-race era to highlight the fact that we do in fact build our future and so it is important to preserve our natural environment and our cultural history.

“The best way to predict the future is to create it” - Abraham Lincoln

When thinking about the possibilities of the future it is important to remember that a positive outlook results in a positive outcome.
